Mahler’s 6th Symphony

Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra performed in Spaulding Auditorium on a Sunday afternoon, an unusual time for a symphony.  This was a big performance, with a completely full stage.  The program is incomplete here, as it only lists the student performers, but there were many more uncredited performers.

The first part of the program was a discussion about the symphony by the conductor.  He had the group play certain themes and key sections from various movements.  He also talked a bit about the hammer, a custom made box that is thumped with a giant mallet. This is the “hammer blows of fate”, and does indeed make a big thump in the performance.  This was the part that I had no idea about, so it was interesting to learn how the students researched and prepared the “instrument”.  The talk was followed by an intermission, then the performance, but I think we could have skipped the talk, and perhaps had a post-performance discussion.

It is a beautiful symphony, but perhaps a bit overwhelming from the front row where I sat.   I did appreciate a close view of the violinists’ score, which I was close enough to follow.

Program Notes

Guys and Dolls

Guys and Dolls by the Hanover High School Footlighters

A fun and light musical comedy set in 1950’s Broadway.  The leading roles were not given to seniors in this concert, which is a bit unusual, given that this would be their final concert.  Except for Lulu, who was well cast in her role.

Danny Collins

Danny CollinsWe went to see this movie based on the preview we had seen 2 days before.  As it said in the beginning of the movie “kind of based on a true story”.  Al Pacino is a great lead as Danny Collins, a kind of aging lounge lizard (a la Rod Stewart) but universally recognized, wealthy star.  His concerts are all sold out, especially to older women, and he travels around in a big tour bus.

The subtheme is about art versus fame and fortune, established in the early section set in 1971. Annette Bening as hotel manager Mary Sinclair provides an able foil.

15DANNY-COLLINS2-superJumboThe John Lennon soundtrack was appropriate, given that the film was inspired by a letter that John wrote to a folk singer, a letter that was never delivered.  In the movie, it provides the impetus for Danny to reexamine his life, and his family, whereas in real life, the letter was retained by a collector who contacted the original singer to verify the letter’s authenticity.

Woman in Gold

Woman in GoldThis was an interesting movie, and it turns out that it was based on a true story.  Helen Mirren as Maria Altmann is very good as usual.  It is the story of the painting of her aunt Adele by Austrian Artist Klimt.

Interestingly, the lawyer that takes on her case is a friend of the family, and grandson of composer Anton Shoenberg.  Shoenbert was also an Austrian Jew, and part of the circle of artists and writers that were patronized by Maria’s wealthy relatives in Vienna.

Journalist Hubertus is in a fact based on a real person, and it is he who seemed to be the big reason why the restitutions were established, and he tracked down the original documents that provided the proof that Maria needed.

She does recover the painting that she rightfully inherited.  She sold it to Ronald Lauder (son of Estée Lauder) for $135M, and it is on display in the Neue Gallery in New York.  So something to see on the next trip to the Big Apple….
